From my immediate observation, our culture is in a time of decadence, one that implies the impending fall of Western civilization. "Edible Regret, Ultimate Hypocrisy" is a depiction of the hypocrisy of the high art world, by displaying them as fat cats in the French Revolution. This piece was meant to be directly critical of high art institutions, which the annual senior exhibition gave the perfect venue for. I dressed with fellow performers as caricatures of Marie Antoinette, and we began to engorge ourselves with cake, icing, sugar, and milk. The outside patio area of the building with its large glass doors gave the perfect opportunity for the type of viewer/performer separation that made the work engaging. The act of looking through the glass for the viewer, can allow me as a performer to push a type of zoo animal viewership that is inviting & engaging. We began to throw cake at the windows at the audience, and trashed the installation in a fit of hedonistic pleasure.
